Christmas recycling at home

Christmas seems to generate its own peculiar mix of waste, which means special recycling issues for residential customers.  Below are details about some common Christmas waste and what EarthSavers can and cannot accept.  (Remember that these restrictions are from the recycling processor, and have to do with details of the reclamation process.)

Wrapping paper – alternatives

First things first – of the three environmental “R“s, (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), Recycle may be the least important.  If we can reduce the amount that we consume, and reuse what we already have, we can avoid the recycle altogether.  Here’s another R for you as Christmas approaches – Reconsider using wrapping paper altogether.  Some alternatives:

  • If you take the newspaper, save all of the green & red color ads (that will be most of them) beginning now and wrap your presents in them.  They’ll be just as colorful and interesting as any wrapping paper you buy in the store.

  • Use gift bags, then reuse them over & over & over

  • Wrap your gifts in decorative cloth.  They’ve been doing it in Japan for centuries (see Furoshiki).

What to place in your recycle bin:

YES:

  • bows, ribbons, wrapping,  etc. made from paper
  • cardboard boxes
  • tissue paper
  • Styrofoam peanuts (please bag!)

NO:

  • bows, ribbons, wrapping, etc. made from metallic foil

  • bubble mailers

  • plastic wrap, twisty ties, misc. packaging (unless marked with a recycle symbol)

5th Mondays & Fridays (residential)

5th weeks

What’s the deal with 5th Mondays / 5th Fridays?  They come every two or three months and we normally pay little attention to them.  But they can confuse our sense of timing when it comes to the recycling schedule.  Here are some hints to help you avoid 5th week confusion:

  • Think in terms of “once-per-month” or “twice-per-month

  • Do NOT think in terms of “every two weeks” or “every four weeks”.  This  will throw you off when the fifth weeks come around every so often
  • Once your new schedule begins in January (remember, add a week to your 2009 schedule), mark every collection day of the year on your calendar.
  • Set up your own email reminders in your email program.  For example, if your collection schedule is the 2nd & 4th Monday, schedule emails to come to you on the Saturday before.  Here are some links to email reminder tutorials for several common email programs:

Going out of town?

ATTENTION CURBSIDE CUSTOMERS!

IMG_5824If you’ll be out of town on your collection day, call us one week ahead of time and request a backdoor collection for that day. We’ll charge $5, and you can leave your container on your driveway next to your house or garage.

Email curbside@earthsavers.org to make your request.

Have overflow? (residential)

Whenever you have more materials to recycle than can fit in your container, you are welcome to leave overflow.  Just remember:IMG_5823

  • Overflow material should be bagged or placed in a cardboard box and left next to your container
  • There is a $5 charge to collect overflow

If you regularly have overflow, it will be more convenient for you to increase your service frequency to twice-per-month.  Already recycling twice-per-month?  Call us about adding an extra cart.

Referral discounts for residential customers

  • For every residential customer you refer to us who signs up for service we will credit your account $10.  Just send them to www.recyclenashville.com, and make sure they enter your name in the referral field when they sign up:

Here’s how it works:

• Check the map on our website to see if your gift recipient may be in the service area.  Then call EarthSavers to set up the green gift.  You tell us the gift level you wish to give and we will take your payment information.

• During the week of Christmas, EarthSavers will email your gift recipient notification of your generous gift.  The recipient must then decide to accept the gift and either call or email EarthSavers to complete account set-up.  Once this is done, your credit card or bank account will be charged for the gift amount.
